Associate, Advocacy Team

We arm clients with political intelligence and targeted engagement strategies to stay ahead in a constantly evolving policy landscape. Our team’s knowledge of how policymaking works – both in and outside government – along with our understanding of the regulatory apparatus allows us to reach and educate policymakers at every level.

Primary Responsibilities

An Associate will directly support the Advocacy Practice by conducting research for ongoing client projects,  assisting with client deliverables, and managing FS Vector’s intern program.  The person will be expected to interact directly with firm clients and participate in meetings and phone calls with firm clients. 

In this role, the Associate will develop knowledge of the client’s business, its objectives, opportunities and challenges, in order to craft meaningful policy goals and the strategies and tactics needed to accomplish them. Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, the following:

  • Conducting in-depth research and providing concise memos on issues of interest to clients including the regulatory landscape, legislation, and other policy areas to give clients a clear understanding of issue areas 
  • Help plan and develop comprehensive public policy programs
  • Providing policy analysis with an eye for impacts on strategic business goals, taking into account the larger political environment
  • Writing and editing a variety of client materials (e.g., regulatory comment letters, suggested questions for hearings, letters for the record, draft legislative language, strategic memos, policy analyses, presentations, emails, bill summaries, social media posts and content, etc.) under the direction of senior team members
  • Drafting proposals for prospective clients
  • Researching appropriate target media for clients, and develop and maintain media lists
  • Maintaining up to date contact lists for clients, helping schedule meetings for clients with policymakers and regulators offices, preparing materials such as one-pagers and decks for those meetings, staffing clients in the meetings, taking notes and ensuring action items from the meetings are followed up on
  • Addressing client issues thoughtfully and effectively
  • Assisting in successfully growing existing accounts and the development of new ones
  • Staying up-to-date on key issues and current events for clients
  • Contributing to the professional development and performance review process for interns, as needed
  • Managing FS Vector intern program
  • Registering to lobby and engaging directly with Congress and the administration.

Client Delivery

  • Demonstrating an understanding of client information, including business strategy, services, stakeholders and competitive landscape
  • Monitoring political and regulatory developments that are important to the client’s interests
  • Executing public policy program activities for a variety of clients simultaneously
  • Delivering high-quality work focused on client needs
  • Creating client-ready deliverables in a timely and efficient manner

Business Development

  • Supporting relationships with clients
  • Working with the team to help clients assess their program needs
  • Participating in generating new business proposals and presentations

Firm Leadership

  • Supporting the development, production, and marketing of thought leadership surrounding emerging trends and issues

What we are looking for in a colleague

  • Possess superior research, public policy, writing, editing skills and oral presentation skills
  • Possess understanding of financial services policy and regulatory issues
  • Familiarity with the financial technology market
  • Ability to communicate effectively on issues
  • A solid grasp of communications, including traditional media as well as digital and social media
  • Strong time and priority management skills and an ability to effectively juggle multiple client projects
  • Desire and ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, deadline-oriented startup environment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of 4 years of financial services policy experience either on Capitol Hill, with a regulatory agency, or related experience
